Enterprise Sales Rep Salary Guide: New York, 2026

New York posts the lowest enterprise AE base of the three major US tech hiring markets and pays the highest total package. That is not a contradiction, it is the comp structure.

Here is a result that stops most hiring managers mid-spreadsheet. Indeed puts the average New York enterprise account executive base at $151,089, which is lower than Boston at $169,512 and lower than Austin at $161,505.*

Meanwhile the agency estimates put New York total compensation at the top of the table: Recruits Lab has New York enterprise AEs at $370,000 to $470,000 OTE, roughly 10% above the national benchmark, against Boston at +3% and Austin at flat.

Lowest base, highest package. Both are true, and the gap between them is the single most important thing to understand before you write a New York offer.

Why New York bases look soft

New York enterprise sales is the most variable-weighted market in the United States. The city's enterprise buyers skew to financial services, insurance, legal and media, all of which run long, large, committee-driven deals. Comp plans follow deal shape: when a single close can be worth seven figures of ARR, employers push money into the accelerator and away from the guaranteed half.

A 40/60 or even 35/65 split is unremarkable in New York fintech. The same seniority in Boston healthtech will usually be 50/50. Average the base alone across both cities and Boston wins, while the New York rep out-earns their Boston counterpart by a wide margin in a good year, and underperforms them badly in a bad one.

So the Indeed figure is not wrong. It is measuring the smaller half of a package that is deliberately back-loaded.

What reps in the metro actually report

RepVue's Greater New York account executive data gives a median $110,000 base against a $205,000 OTE, with top performers reported above $545,000.*

One caveat, because it matters and most guides skip it: that RepVue page covers account executives at all levels, from SMB through enterprise, not enterprise AEs specifically. It is not directly comparable to the Indeed enterprise figure above, and you should not read the $110,000 as a New York enterprise base. What it is good for is the shape of the market, and the shape is striking: a base-to-OTE ratio of roughly 54%, and a top-performer ceiling more than five times the median base.

For an enterprise-specific anchor you have to go national. RepVue's US enterprise AE page, drawn from 35,605 ratings as of October 2026, reports:*

MeasureFigure
Median base$140,000
Median OTE$280,000
Top performer$678,811
Reps at or above quota39%

The 39% problem, which is worse in New York

Across all US enterprise AEs, 39% hit quota. That figure should reframe every OTE number in this guide, and it bites hardest in exactly the market that leans hardest on variable pay.

Work it through. A Boston rep on a 50/50 split at $300,000 OTE who lands at 70% attainment takes home roughly $255,000. A New York rep on a 35/65 split at $420,000 OTE at the same 70% attainment takes home about $338,000. The New York rep still wins, but they have carried far more of the risk to get there, and in a weak year the positions converge fast.

Candidates who have sold in New York for a decade understand this instinctively. They will ask about your attainment distribution, not your OTE. If you cannot answer, they will read that as an answer. We have written separately on how to interrogate quota attainment claims properly.

What to budget

New York also sits under genuine pay disclosure obligations at both state and city level, so whatever you post will be read against the market and against your competitors. A defensible 2026 band for an enterprise AE carrying a $1.5M-plus quota:

ComponentRangeNotes
Base$145,000 to $170,000Around the $151K posted average, above the $140K national enterprise median
Split40/60 to 50/50Push toward 40/60 only if deal sizes genuinely justify it
OTE at 100%$320,000 to $400,000Below the agency $370K to $470K, which reads rich against rep-reported data
AcceleratorsAbove 100%This is where New York actually competes, and where you should spend

If you are hiring against financial services buyers specifically, the top of that band is a floor rather than a ceiling.

The practical takeaway

Do not compete on base in New York. You will lose to a Boston employer offering $170,000 guaranteed and a gentler quota, and you will attract exactly the candidate who wants that instead.

Compete on the accelerator and on attainment honesty. The reps worth hiring in this market are the ones who want the upside, and they can tell within two questions whether your plan actually pays it out.

If you want a New York band stress-tested against what reps in your segment are genuinely banking rather than what their contracts promise, talk to us.
