Cyber security has run at sustained under-supply for a decade, and the effect is that good practitioners are approached constantly and screen out most of it. Generic approaches fail here more comprehensively than in almost any other discipline. A credible first conversation has to demonstrate that the consultant knows whether you are hiring for detection engineering, offensive testing, governance or architecture, because those are different careers with different motivations.
Clearance and regulatory context frequently narrow the field further, particularly in defence, financial services and critical national infrastructure.
